“15 BANDS WHO ARE CRUCIAL TO THE HISTORY OF NOISE MUSIC”

New feature on Alternative Press includes Pussy Galore, Lydia Lunch, Sonic Youth and Jesus & Mary Chain among many others.

“Pussy Galore

Mid-’80s Washington, D.C. emigrates to the Lower East Side, Pussy Galore brought the rock ’n’ roll and punk attitudes back to noise. Fronted by future Blues Explosion mastermind Jon Spencer, PG raised an unholy din not dissimilar to putting a copy of the Nuggets ’60s garage comp and some scuffed-up Rolling Stones 45s through a meat grinder. It helped to have ex-Sonic Youth drummer Bert pounding a kit that featured a few bits and bobs culled from a junkyard. Lacking a bass guitar, PG’s three-guitar assault was the ultimate simultaneous desecration/celebration of all that’s great about rock ’n’ roll.”

“Given the stripped down to the bone trio of two guitars (Judah Bauer, fresh off from a multi-year consignment duty with Cat Power) and drums (the inimitable Russell Simins banging away in a most kinetic manner) it wouldn’t be unreasonable to assume that it would be all mid- and high-range frequencies blasting out of the PAs and amps, but the band’s always been influenced by hip-hop culture, and somewhere Simins had access to a device that would send out depth-charge blasts of full bass every once in a while.” – Tim Bugbee / BigTakeOver.com
