Jon Spencer – Venus In Furs: Video / Review

Audience-shot video of Jon Spencer performing Venus In Furs at “The Bells: A Daylong Celebration of Lou Reed”, Lincoln Center, New York City, NY, US on 30 July 2016.

“Post-punk avant-scuzz-rock classicist Jon Spencer, rocking shades and dressed head to toe in black, was a dead ringer for 1966 Lou, capping a perfect “Venus in Furs” by laying his guitar on the stage, removing his black leather belt, and flogging it while the amps howled. “That’s how it’s done,” said MC and producer Don Fleming glowingly.” – Rolling Stone

“When Jon Spencer took the stage and did “Venus in Furs,” the music took flight, and the whole thing suddenly came alive. I smiled uncontrollably—that old V.U. feeling. And not because of pro-Spencer bias. In the nineties, I grouchily put up with everyone’s love of Jon Spencer Blues Explosion, and scowled my way through a show in which he blues-exploded all over the stage, doing splits. But now, for the first time that day, I wanted to be in front—eff the sun. Spencer managed a Reed-ian vibe with an intensity that felt just right. At the end, he removed his belt, laid his guitar on the stage, and whipped it, silliness that I found myself enjoying.” – The New Yorker

5 Famous Drum Set Quirks feat. Bob Bert / Pussy Galore

“Bob Bert’s Scrap Metal

Early Sonic Youth drummer Bob Bert joined noise-rock outfit Pussy Galore in the mid ’80s and moved on to banging away on scrap metal to create his harsh beats. Ladled with sheets of steel and big, heavy springs laid out across his drums that he used to create a bizarre, shrill sonic palette, Bert’s kick-drum-mounted traps table looked more like the back of a scrapper’s truck than part of an instrument. This setup perfectly complemented the demented noise created by John Spencer and Neil Michael Hagerty. The tin-can plinks and iron-chain clunks became just as much a part of the band’s twisted sound as their raging, out-of-tune guitars.” – reverb.com
