Bob Bert – NEW INTERVIEW with Valerie Simadis: “From Sonic Youth to Pussy Galore: Bob Bert Debuts His First Solo Album ‘Beach Bongo Bloodbath'” (19 August 2026)

“VS: When did you join Pussy Galore and how did that band differ from other groups that you had been in?

Bob Bert: I quit Sonic Youth in late ’85 and essentially took a break from music because I was trying to do other creative things. One night, I was at a place called The Cat Club (which was on 13th Street or 12th Street) and I went to see the German industrial band Einstürzende Neubauten. It was two in the morning or something and I was standing there talking to Kim Gordon and Thurston Moore. I mentioned to them that I was getting eager to play again, and they said “Well, this band just moved to New York from D.C. called Pussy Galore.” The band was standing a few feet away so I went over and introduced myself. I was thirty at the time, and the band was so young! Jon Spencer must have been twenty/twenty-one, his girlfriend at the time, Christina [Martinez], was only nineteen and Julia [Cafritz] was twenty. They had just dropped out of Brown University and they had gone to D.C. and formed Pussy Galore. The band wasn’t really accepted in D.C. because they weren’t part of the whole dischord / hardcore scene, so they eventually came up to New York.”
