The Jon Spencer Blues Explosion – Melody Maker: Orange [Review] (PRESS, UK)

NOTES:
Review of Orange by The Jon Spencer Blues Explosion from Melody Maker.

“You hanker after soul and savvy and sex, right? You need Jon Spencer, reckons John Robb.”

“Spencer is a sharp blade who knows that the feel of rock’n’roll was far better in the deadly Fifties than the overrated Sixties.

Not that “Orange” is a period piece. Sure, he combines Beefheart, the blues, rockabilly, blaxploitation soundtracks and even hip hop into this unholy, godlike surge of excitement, but he stamps all over it with a mid-Nineties suss. This is the genuine article and we’ve been waiting all year for this moment.”

“This record burns; it burns with ideas, passion, great musicianship (damn right! Stand up Judah Bauer on guitar and Russell Simins on drums and take a f***ing bow) style, sex and sass, you know, all the things that you really want from some vital vinyl.”

“…this is raw sex music and raw sex hasn’t changed that much in the past 10 thousand years. Sometimes it’s great it’s great just to strip right down and party.”
