“The most indelible memory I have of the week Kurt died is an 8×10 piece of typing paper with the name “Kurdt” scrawled on it with Sharpie. Three days after his death, The Breeders’ concert schedule had them booked at the Showcase Special Events Center in San Antonio. Pressed up against the barrier, stage right, before openers Th’ Faith Healers came on, I saw the sheet of paper pinned to the Marshall amp behind where Kim Deal would soon be playing. It was obvious she had written it. Both Kim and her sister Kelley were still using at the time, so Kurt’s death had shaken them badly. Th’ Faith Healers played a blinding, ferocious set. So did the middle act, Jon Spencer’s Blues Explosion. When the Breeders came out, Kim forlornly mentioned that she had lost a friend that week. Then her band began to play.” – Randy Haecker
