“JON SPENCER
Songs Of Personal Loss And Protest
SHOVE
8/10
More amusingly feral rockabilly from the Pussy Galore/Blues
Explosion veteran

Aged 61, Jon Spencer is still making hoary old rockabilly cliches sound thrilling PROTEST and funny in equal
measure, his half-howled, half-spoken megaphone vocals still pitched somewhere between Mark E Smith, Lux Interior and a Southern Baptist preacher. As with 2024’s Sick Of Being Sick, he’s backed by the swaggering, twenty- something bassist and drummer from Woodstock trio The Bobby Lees. “Knock Em Out” is a feral prog-punk highlight; “Mr Lion” a shambolic 16-bar blues set in the jungle; “Hangover” a piece of slow-burning sludge metal that narrates a morning recovery; while “Vermin Attack” is the heaviest song you’ll ever hear about mouse infestation.
JOHN LEWIS”
