“Jon Spencer
Sick Of Being Sick!
BRONZE RAT. DL/LP
Controlled blast of the blues exploding, with The Bobby Lees’ rhythm section.
After his guitar foil in the Blues Explosion, Judah Bauer, retired circa 2016, Spencer kept
moving with his HITmakers, reconnected with Pussy Galore percussionist Bob Bert, and brought fresh no-fi colour via Sam Coomes’ cheapo keys. Two years on from their rousing Spencer Gets It Lit, the NYC trash king here returns to a trio format, fronting the battering rhythm section from Woodstock garage-punkers, The Bobby Lees. This ‘solo’ debut inescapably re-ignites the primal three-pronged assault of JSBX’s self-titled party-starter from 1992, condensing a full album’s worth of kicks into an explosive sub-half-hour. The wisdom of Macky Spider Bowman’s recruitment is instantly felt as the 20-something drummer’s John Bonham-worthy breakbeats power opener Wrong for a breathtaking two-minute dash. With sinewy bassist Kendall Wind locked in tight, Spencer sounds properly invigorated, on Fancy Pants hitting new heights of freewheeling lechery and, with fitting sartorial confluence, Bellbottoms-esque groove.
