SLEEVE NOTES / INFORMATION:

TRANSLATED TEXT:

“Boss Hog Profile

In the late ’80s, Christina Martinez met Jon Spencer (who later became the leader of THE JON SPENCER BLUES EXPLOSION and Christina’s husband), the guitarist and vocalist of the now-legendary New York junky punk rock act Bushy Galore, and formed the band, which then took to the stage for the first time. It seems the members themselves were most surprised by the huge sensation this makeshift band caused, which likely had something to do with lead singer Christina’s decision to perform the entire first show completely nude.

The band released their first cassette-only EP, “Drinkin’, Letchin’ and Lyin’,” in 1989, followed by the CD “Cold Hands” in 1990. However, it took several musicians to solidify Boss Hog into the solid band it is today. It wasn’t until they hired bassist Jens, who Christina describes as having a “buzzsaw-like overdrive sound,” and finally the chatty Hollis Queens (who is also the girlfriend of JSBX’s Judah Bauer), that the band took on its current form.

1993 marked a turning point for Boss Hogg with the release of their CD, “Girl+.” Not only did the CD receive critical acclaim, it also signaled their departure from the “Americana of the moment” bands that were rapidly emerging. In developing their own unique style, the band drew inspiration from a diverse range of sources, from ’80s “negatron punk” (Flipper, The Birthday Party, etc.) to cool ’70s R&B (JJ Walker All-Stars), Devo, and APE. Additionally, Boss Hogg gradually shifted from the straightforward, hyper-sexy aesthetic of their early days to a more refined, “glamorous” approach. Supported by a mini-tour accompanying the release, “Girl+” sold like hotcakes.

In 1997, Boss Hogg’s first release on the Geffen/DGC label, produced and mixed by the mysterious Steve Fisk, marked another major step forward for the band, as the album saw Boss Hogg switch, flirt, and romp through a dizzying range of musical and lyrical styles.

And now, this new album has arrived. What’s particularly noteworthy is the incredibly diverse and impressive lineup of big-name producers featured on the credits, including Andy Gill, the guitarist for Gang of Four and known for his work with the early Red Hot Chili Peppers, the New York industrial/junk prince Jim Foetus, and even the Swedish genius Tore Johansson. Also noteworthy is the production work by Jon Spencer, who gained acclaim as a sound creator for his brilliant collaboration with producer on the 1998 album “ACME.””
