” [Mute Logo] Pussy Galore Biog from August 1987 Pussy Galore formed in Washington DC in September ’85. Jon Spencer (vocals and guitar), is the primary songwriter and claims as his musical influences, 60’s garage bands and industrial music. Julia Cafritz (guitar and vocals) is originally from DC and met Jon at university which they both ultimately left to pursue fame and fortune. Drummer John Hammil, a fellow college drop-out, was recruited soon after their inception and in October ’85, Pussy Galore recorded their first release “Feel Good About Your Body”. In January ’86 guitarist Neil Haggerty joined the line up. In March ’86, the band recorded “Groovy Hate Fuck”, released in June ’86. Shortly after the release of “Groovy Hate Fuck”, Pussy Galore moved to New York City. John Hammill remained in DC but the band quickly found a replacement in Bob Bert (former drummer with Sonic Youth) who introduced the modified metal drum kit. Cristina from DC also joined adding a fourth guitar to the line up. At the end of August they recorded the infamous “Exile On Main Street”, a complete cover of the Rolling Stones classic double LP of the same name (and some say a before-the-fact answer to Sonic Youth’s ever promised White Album). This 18 song cassette was recorded in two days on a borrowed 4 track cassette and self engineered and produced. Released at the same time as “Exile” was a limited edition (200 copies) live cassette “1yr Live” which quickly sold out. In September ’86, Pussy Galore recorded tracks for “Pussy Gold 5000”, dropped Cristina and continued as a four-piece. In January ’87, “Pussy Gold 5000” was released, the single pressing of 3,000 sold out in one month. More… In March ’87, the band undertook a two week tour of the midwest USA with the purpose of reaching Chicago to finish recording tracks for “Right Now” with Steve Albini of Big Black. Arguably their strongest effort to date, this 19 track LP features such soon to be classic songs as “NYC 1999”, “New Breed” and “Pussy Stomp”. In April ’87, guitarist Neil Haggerty left the band and was replaced by Kurt Wolf. “Right Now” has received rave reviews in both US and UK music papers, making it evident that Pussy Galore have developed in little less than two years from virtual unknowns into one of the more exciting forces in underground music. Pussy Galore are: Jon Spencer (guitar and vocals) Mute Records will be re-releasing “Dial ‘M’ For Motherfucker”, “Right Now!” albums and the “Sugarshit Sharp EP” on 4th May.
