THE Blues Explosion rehearsed early this week at drummer Russell Simins’ junk-filled studio in Chelsea.

The three members – frontman Jon Spencer, guitarist Judah Bauer and Simins – had a only few misfires as they dug deep into the band’s 14-year history to mine a few blues-pounding nuggets for an upcoming three-night stand at CBGB (315 Bowery; [212] 982-4052) that starts Sunday.

Live, the rockers rattle off tunes one after another, without a set list – and usually without comment.

“We just do it,” Spencer says.

Formed in 1991, as the Jon Spencer Blues Explosion (they dropped Spencer’s name with the release of 2004’s “Damage”), the blazing rock trio is working on a retrospective coffee-table book and DVD. And they recently engaged Dan the Automator to produce a CD of Blues Explosion remixes by buzz bands such as Solex, DFA and the alphabetically challenged !!!.

After CB’s, the New York-based band leaves to co-headline a European tour with the Hives. Greeted as stars in Europe, the Blues Explosion has never had much more than a cult following here.

“We’ve traveled all over the world, but it started to bug me that we’re a non-presence at home,” Spencer says. So with CBGB on the brink of death, now’s the time to make Spencer happy, visit the punk shrine and see a band you’ve actually heard of.” – Mary Huhn / New York Post (April 8, 2005)
